Business and Leadership Skills laid bare

Business, Economics and Entrepreneurship students have been helping CPA Australia uncover the success secrets of Australian business leaders to help students get a head start in their careers.

Six students were flown to Melbourne for an exclusive day of mentoring led by CPA Australia CEO Alex Malley, and a preview of their new campaign, The Naked CEO.

Back on campus as student ambassadors they’ve been promoting the campaign to their peers across the University.

The Naked CEO is an online reality series offering a behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to be a business leader, giving the next generation of business leaders a rare chance to learn from the current generation.

Interviews with business leaders, including Woolworths Chairman James Strong and the Zanerobe fashion label founders, give a rare glimpse into the boardrooms of innovative and successful companies.

Students hear how they handle the day-to-day challenges of running a business and, most importantly, experience first-hand the qualities it takes to be a successful leader.

Student ambassador Vanessa Kolaczkos, final-year Commerce student, says The Naked CEO provides a “true perspective of what is possible for students, what you can obtain from life and the endless opportunities available”.

“I have been able to gain a greater understanding of what I can achieve and how I can go about this,” says Vanessa. “I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to meet Alex Malley and have a valuable conversation with him where he offered me advice that I’ve taken on in relation to applying for graduate programs.

“I would strongly recommend any students to get involved. It’s not limited to just Commerce/Business students; it’s a success, future planning campaign that can assist any student with direction and career pathways.”

Vanessa is Vice-President of the Adelaide Business Students’ Society (ABSS), which is assisting the promotion of the campaign through their ongoing activities.

Vishal Jodhani, in his second year of a Masters in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, said: “As an Entrepreneurship student, I especially enjoy their meetings with start-up businesses and the advice they offer to others considering the same path. Overall, for me, these are bite-size dozes of valuable lessons and inspiration, presented in a light and engaging format.”

Double degrees offered with French and German universities

University of Adelaide business students will gain overseas experience – and an extra Masters degree – under new agreements with two major institutions in Europe. The University of Adelaide has signed separate double degree arrangements with France’s biggest university, the University of Strasbourg, and with the Leipzig Graduate School of Management (HHL) in Germany. The most recent of these is the Strasbourg agreement, which was signed in mid Dec 2011. Under the agreements, business students at Masters Level will have the chance to broaden their horizons by studying for one year in their home country followed by one year abroad. Students from the University of Adelaide’s Business School will travel to France or Germany, while French and German students will also travel to Adelaide, at no extra tuition cost. The result will be a Masters degree from each institution:

  • Strasbourg agreement: a Master of International Business from Adelaide, and a Master of International and European Business from Strasbourg (www.em-strasbourg.eu/_en);
  • Leipzig agreement: a Master of International Business from Adelaide, and a Master of Science in Management from HHL(www.hhl.de/nc/en).

 ”We know that countries are no longer economically independent; Australia’s future prosperity depends on what happens elsewhere in the world. Therefore, our graduates need to be ‘world ready’, and to achieve this we must embrace internationalization more proactively,” said the Executive Dean of the Faculty of the Professions, Professor Christopher Findlay. Professor Findlay said that double degrees, short-term overseas study tours and student exchanges are all ways in which the Faculty will boost the international experience for students across a number of discipline areas. For example, short-term study tours funded by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) will see Education students from Adelaide study in Peru, Law students study in Germany and the Netherlands, and Business and Economics students in France and Belgium. Professor Findlay  also said that “Having international experience and being ready for a global environment is critical to our students’ future success. We are keen to work with like-minded and prestigious institutions such as Strasbourg and HHL, as study abroad becomes an increasingly central part of our students’ educational experience.”
