Assessment is a hot topic at the moment! At CSER, we’ve seen a great deal of interest in professional development around assessment, as schools are starting to move from implementation to reporting phases of Digital Technologies curricula.

Recently, Rebecca Vivian and Katrina Falkner had a peer-reviewed research paper about teacher self-efficacy for Digital Technologies, accepted at the 2018 13th Workshop in Primary and Secondary Computing Education in Germany. As the paper is behind a paywall, we present the key findings for you below.

What did we find?

The findings demonstrated that teacher self-efficacy differs between phases of formal school curriculum implementation and reporting, suggesting that with time and experience teachers can build self-efficacy in assessment for Digital Technologies but that continued and sustained support is required to grow teacher self-efficacy and more complex assessment skills and knowledge.

What are the challenges?

Teachers identified some of the key challenges in assessment of Digital Technologies were related to a lack of perceived discipline knowledge, time and opportunities to build practice and experience, a need for assessment-focused professional development, opportunities for collaboration with colleagues in school, as well as infrastructure and school leadership support.

What are the opportunities?

Teachers suggested that they needed more resources supporting assessment design and reporting practices, support with unpacking the assessment in the curriculum, integration of Digital Technologies assessment with other subject areas and opportunities to build deeper content and curriculum knowledge beyond Digital Technologies fundamentals. In terms of Leadership support, teachers suggested leaders can support time and opportunities to explore assessment with colleagues in school across year levels, facilitate opportunities for staff to share and develop assessment practices, and include assessment as part of a strategic phase of curriculum implementation.

Where can my school start?

If you or your school needs assessment support, a great place to start is  with the Digital Technologies Hub. They have released a series of assessment examples with much more to come! Rebecca Vivian (CSER) and Martin Richards (Digital Technologies Hub) delivered a free webinar on Assessment for primary and secondary Digital Technologies which you can still watch on-demand here. If you are creating assessment activities or resources and think other teachers across Australia would benefit from them, send them on through to the Digital Technologies Hub (digitaltechnologieshub@esa.edu.au)! They love to share authentic examples by teachers, for teachers!

While our Project Officers are busy travelling to major cities and remote locations to deliver K-12 Digital Technologies professional development to teachers all around Australia, lifelong learning is an ongoing process and our team are always keen to up-skill to ensure teachers have the latest and most up-to-date professional development experiences in their workshops!

In October this year we had the Team fly in from across Australia for a two-day team meeting at CSER Headquarters at The University of Adelaide.

The Team started with a briefing and future directions discussion from Project Lead, Professor Katrina Falkner, on the latest CSER Digital Technologies Program metrics in which the team were thrilled to hear that over 30,000 teachers have now engaged in our program, including our free MOOCs, PL-in-a-Box and face-to-face workshops!

The hands-on sessions kicked off with a workshop on Assessment for Digital Technologies by Dr Rebecca Vivian. Rebecca shared examples and approaches to Assessment for Digital Technologies. The Project Officers then worked together to brainstorm assessment recommendations for the new Lending Library lessons.

During the rest of the two-day event, the team were engaged in hands-on professional development sessions. These sessions were run by Project Officers for Project Officers! They walked one another through how to use the new Lending Library equipment (Dash and Dot, BlueBots and Micro:bits) and their lesson plans, sharing expertise, tips, links to curriculum content and pedagogical strategies.

Some of our most valuable learnings come from peers and the Project Officers valued the time to immerse themselves with the new Lending Library technology equipment and to discuss ideas and pedagogy – with lots of fun and Computational Thinking along the way!

Make sure to look at our Lending Library page to find out about our latest kits. If you’d like to work with one of our Project Officers based in your state/territory visit our free professional learning page.

On the 31st of October CSER are partnering with the Digital Technologies Hub to deliver a free webinar on assessment for Digital Technologies!

Rebecca and her team at CSER have developed a framework, in partnership with Martin Richards at the Digital Technologies Hub, to help teachers with the interpretation of the ACARA achievement strands for Digital Technologies. In this webinar Rebecca walks us through an approach to generate assessment activities using Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy. Rebecca will show how to use the achievement standards and content descriptors as a guide for breaking down and identifying the skills, behaviours and knowledge you are seeking students to demonstrate. We’ll refer to the use of checklists, student interviews (think-alouds) and rubrics. We will also refer to the SOLO Taxonomy as a way of differentiating a task and using this as a basis for assessment.

Join them to get some ideas for formative assessment and summative assessment, as well as assessment as learning, where students engage in the assessment process using relevant strategies and as they reflect on their learning experience.

Participants who register will receive a Handout, including access to an exclusive PL-in-a-Box pack on Assessment that you can run with your colleagues!

DATE: WED 31 October 4.30-5.30 (AEDT)
