Fight the good fight: Tackling cybersecurity

Cyberattacks are now costing businesses around $500 billion per year, according to the Australian Computer Society. Cybercrime is prolific, with online fraud overtaking the commerce of Google and Facebook. The threat is very real, not only for individuals but for organisations and governments too.

This is why the eChallenge is launching its inaugural Cybersecurity stream. Kicking off Thursday 27 July, the program aims to foster innovations in cybersecurity that improve:.

  • application security
  • information security
  • network security
  • operational security
    • The Cybersecurity eChallenge will challenge students, business professionals, academics and the general community to work together to develop new products, processes and services that in protecting networks, computers, programs and data from attach, damage or unauthorised access.

    The biggest threat comes from within organisations, that is, the “insider problem” and I am not talking about malicious employees. How can we minimise the accidental and naive behaviour of computer users? Is this problem analagous to improving the behaviour of motor car drivers in that there is no silver bullet solution?
