Tax reform focus for University of Adelaide Economics Workshop

Media Release on Federal Relations & Tax Reform Workshop

GST reform, alcohol taxation, and state property taxes are among the many issues going under the microscope at a senior-level Federal Relations and Tax Reform Workshop being held by the University of Adelaide next week (28-29 August).

The event will hear from Australian and overseas tax experts, bringing together representatives of academia with government to discuss economic challenges and solutions across a range of tax areas.

“The main intention of our event is to address some of the emerging economic and policy issues facing Australia, and to investigate how tax reform might best accommodate those issues,” says event organiser and Head of the School of Economics at the University of Adelaide, Professor Gareth Myles.

“Our workshop brings together a diverse audience of academics, policy makers, and practitioners, and we expect it to spark some high-level discussion that will be of benefit to state and federal governments alike,” he says.

Among the many presentations across the two days are:

GST reform in Australia

  • Alcohol taxation and the impact of policy inconsistencies
  • Reforming State property taxes

Keynote speakers include Sean Dougherty (OECD Network on Fiscal Relations) and Saul Eslake (Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow, University of Tasmania).

“The response to our workshop from governments, and taxation and federal relations experts nationally, has been outstanding. This bodes well for our discussions and potential outcomes from the event,” Professor Myles says.

“Importantly, the School of Economics at the University of Adelaide has a role to play in bringing together intellectual leaders in this field, for the potential benefit of communities right across our nation.”
