Honours student Vicki Dimitrak is conducting a study concerning consumer preference of sample delivery for Colorectal Cancer (CRC) screening tests. The study will explore what people think about bowel cancer screening and preferences for different kinds of bowel cancer screening tests.

Unicare telehealth network gives Adelaide Medical Students greater access to vital clinical experience

New Telehealth Teaching System at the University of Adelaide improves student teaching and access to healthcare for patients.

Medical students will be trained in important areas of practice where it has been difficult to get enough clinical experience, thanks to a new telehealth network established at the University of Adelaide.

The Unicare e-health project makes it efficient and easy to communicate via video from the university to hospitals, rural general practices, specialist practices and other health services.

Dr Victoria Wade, Clinical Director of the Adelaide University UniCare Telehealth Project, said that the network is being used to deliver medical services and medical student training at the same time, so students can be trained in real-world areas of medical practice.

“The team behind the project has been involved in over 270,000 video consultations but we are breaking into exciting new territory by using the telehealth application for clinical teaching by video,” Dr Wade said.

“For example, each week, 12 to 15 medical students observe a child and adolescent psychiatry assessment with Professor Jon Jureidini at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital then participate in a video tutorial about the assessment. Previously, only one or two students at a time could have this experience, and many students missed out.”

Dr Wade said that the telehealth service also can improve patient care. “General Practitioners can connect their patients to specialists sooner, and get quick advice for urgent situations. Patients save time and money on travel and get better access to health care. Specialists can follow up their patients more easily with improved continuity. All of this results in better patient care, especially for rural and remote areas.”

Using telehealth for clinical teaching has these additional advantages:

• Students have a wider range of clinical experience, so they start professional practice better prepared.

• Students have hands-on experience in delivering services by Telehealth

• Better support and backup can be given to students, so they can do their best for patients and for their own education.

The Adelaide University Unicare e-health project is expanding this approach to other healthcare students, including psychology, counselling, and those undertaking rural placements.

Our new $6m Dental Simulation Clinic

Event photos from the School of Dentistry’s opening of the Dental Simulation Clinic and launch of the Dental Research and Education Fund are now found on the Faculty of Health Sciences Flickr Photosteam.

The new simulation clinic has been made possible thanks to a $2.8 million grant from Health Workforce Australia, with additional funding from the University and the South Australian Foundation for Dental Education and Research (SAFDER). It was officially launched on Thursday 2nd May by the Hon. Kate Ellis MP, Member for Adelaide.

Meningococcal Vaccine Trial

University of Adelaide researchers at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital are conducting a trial of a potential vaccine against the most common cause of life threatening meningococcal disease in Australia.

“Meningococcal B is a very serious and life-threatening condition with up to 10% of children and adolescents dying from the infection. It is rapidly fatal and a very distressing disease for families,” says Associate Professor Helen Marshall, from the University of Adelaide’s Robinson Institute and Director of the Vaccinology and Immunology Research Trials Unit at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Adelaide.

Clinical trials are underway evaluating the safety of a potential meningococcal B vaccine in healthy adolescents and adults. The results of the study will be reviewed prior to licensing of the vaccine in Australia. This work is part of a large international study.

Healthy adolescents and young adults aged 10-26 years are needed to take part in the vaccine study. Parents who would like their teenager to take part in the study, or young adults interested in participating, should call Study Coordinator Su-San Lee on 8161 8117.

Alzheimer’s Disease Development, Early Detection, & Lifestyle Prevention Factors – Professor Ralph. N. Martins AO

Come and hear one of the world’s fore most experts on Alzheimer’s Disease describe recent, exciting progress in early detection and treatment. His lecture will be followed by a short talk from Dr Michael Lardelli on Alzheimer’s Disease research at The University of Adelaide.

Professor Ralph Martins was voted Western Australian of the Year in 2010 and Western Australian Citizen of the Year in 2011. He is the Inaugural Chair in Ageing and Alzheimer’s at Edith Cowan University, Western Australia. Professor Martins is supported by the McCusker Alzheimer’s Research Foundation in Western Australia, and by national and international research funding bodies. Jointly presented by the SA & NT Dementia Training Study Centre and the School of Molecular and Biomedical Science of the University of Adelaide.

Stroke rates decline but many still preventable

The rate of strokes suffered by Australians has dropped over the past 20 years, while strokes caused by an irregular heartbeat now account for one third of all strokes, according to new research led by the University of Adelaide.

The results of a major stroke incidence study are published in this month’s issue of the international journal Stroke. The study looked at the number and causes of strokes among 148,000 people living in the western suburbs of Adelaide.

The study, conducted in 2009-2010, found that the incidence of first stroke was 161 per 100,000 people per annum. That’s down by almost 10% on a similar population study in Perth in 1989-1990, which found the incidence of first stroke was 178 per 100,000 people.

“With an increasingly aging population, we might have expected to see the number of strokes in the community rising. However, what we’re seeing is that the rate of strokes is actually decreasing, which is good news for Australians,” says a chief investigator of the study, Professor Jonathan Newbury from the University of Adelaide’s School of Population Health.

Emeritus Professor Anna Wirz-Justice is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Chronobiology, Psychiatric Hospital of the University of Basel.

With more than 20 year of research on seasonal affective disorder and light therapy, her outstanding contributions to the field has allowed Anna to introduce light therapy to Europe. Her collaboration with artists, architects and designers, who are inspired by the complexities of neuroscience, has instigated the incorporation of novel lighting regimens in architecture to improve sleep, mood and cognition in Alzheimer’s patients.
