Thomas Caunce, PhD candidate in the School of History and Politics at the University of Adelaide under the supervision of Professor Carol Johnson, is the successful applicant for the 2012 Bill Cowan Barr Smith Library Fellow award.

Thomas’s research is concerned with the Australian Labor Party’s social democratic ideology and its relation to Keynesian economics, which he describes as an ambivalent history of ideological empowerment but perceived obsolescence. As well as extensive use of the general collections of the Library the research will make intensive use of the Special Collections holdings of Commonwealth ALP government speeches and policy documents, which are not accessible in any other South Australian public collection.

Thomas’s research has gained notice in his field with presentations of refereed papers at the 2010 and 2011 Australian Political Studies Association Conferences. He has been the recipient of a number of awards including a short term Summer Research Scholarship at the Australian Prime Ministers’ Centre, Museum of Australia, Canberra, in 2011.

In response to the award Thomas said, “It is truly humbling to have received such a generous scholarship from a family trust which has sustained such a strong commitment to financially stressed tertiary students. The Bill Cowan Fellowship will provide me with the opportunity to concentrate on my thesis research in an uninterrupted manner using the Barr Smith Library’s collections. For this I am immensely grateful”.

The Friends of the University of Adelaide Library invite you to an author
event with Ghil’ad Zuckermann on Thursday 17 May.

Language revival is becoming increasingly relevant as people seek to recover their lost heritage. Linguists and revivalists worldwide have much to learn from Hebrew’s remarkable, hybridic modern-day rebirth, argues Professor Ghil’ad Zuckermann, Chair of Endangered Languages at the University of Adelaide.

Professor Zuckermann will explain the process of reviving a “Sleeping Beauty” language, such as Hebrew, the South Australian Aboriginal Kaurna, and Hawaiian, and the influences that come into play, resulting in a hybrid that combines the revivalists’ and documenters’ mother tongues and the target tongue.

Siobhan Owen, Celtic singer & harpist, will play before and after the talk.

Details:
Date: Thursday 17 May at 6 for 6:30pm.

Barr Smith Library Levels 1 and 2, including the Barr Smith Reading Room, are designated as quiet study areas.

This means that while users can have quiet brief discussion, prolonged and/or loud discussions that disturb other users’ ability to study are not. Users who are disturbing others will be asked to quieten down or move out of the area.

Level 3 North is designated as a quiet collaborative area where quiet discussion is permitted

We recommend Hub Central as the place to go if you want get together for more animated discussions over a coffee or lunch.

In all Library areas mobile phones must be on silent for incoming calls or turned off. Quiet, brief phone conversations or text messaging is OK; otherwise users should use their phones in the Barr Smith stairwells or Hub Central.

Note that no area of the Barr Smith Library is designated as a silent area.

If you are being disturbed by other library users, please report this to a library staff member or phone 8313 5759.
