Tom Caunce

Thomas Caunce, PhD candidate in the School of History and Politics at the University of Adelaide under the supervision of Professor Carol Johnson, is the successful applicant for the 2012 Bill Cowan Barr Smith Library Fellow award.

Thomas’s research is concerned with the Australian Labor Party’s social democratic ideology and its relation to Keynesian economics, which he describes as an ambivalent history of ideological empowerment but perceived obsolescence. As well as extensive use of the general collections of the Library the research will make intensive use of the Special Collections holdings of Commonwealth ALP government speeches and policy documents, which are not accessible in any other South Australian public collection.

Thomas’s research has gained notice in his field with presentations of refereed papers at the 2010 and 2011 Australian Political Studies Association Conferences. He has been the recipient of a number of awards including a short term Summer Research Scholarship at the Australian Prime Ministers’ Centre, Museum of Australia, Canberra, in 2011.

In response to the award Thomas said, “It is truly humbling to have received such a generous scholarship from a family trust which has sustained such a strong commitment to financially stressed tertiary students. The Bill Cowan Fellowship will provide me with the opportunity to concentrate on my thesis research in an uninterrupted manner using the Barr Smith Library’s collections. For this I am immensely grateful”.

Now you can search the more than 3.6 billion experimental and predicted properties in SciFinder to find substances that meet your need.

• Substance searchers now also benefit from the convenience of inputting a CAS Registry Number^® to the structure editor in SciFinder. Instead of relying solely on their drawing ability, you can rely on the most widely recognized substance identifier to accurately produce a model for structure-based searching.

• A Quick View feature for substances and references. From multiple points within SciFinder, you can gain a quick view of details related to a select substance or reference. Quick View points the way to a potential search without first needing to change your current search position. It also makes scanning large answer sets easier. All you have to do to gain this Quick View is click a small magnifying glass icon.

AV materials have been integrated into the Holds shelf and the Hold shelf has moved into Reserve.

Microform scanners are also now in Reserve.

Please note that any items with a yellow R sticker are linked to a Reserve course list and these are available as a standard reserve three hour loan or overnight when appropriate.  All other items are loanable for the standard period for the material type, eg. DVDs, CDs and kits one week.
