‘What’s happening’ in jazz!

Latin Jazz Ensemble Riverland tour

The Adelaide University Latin Jazz Ensemble, directed by Mark Ferguson, Lecturer in Jazz Piano, went on a mini-tour to the Riverland in the mid-semester break. The students held a workshop and a performance at Loxton High, a public gig at the Berri Hotel and a performance at Glossop High.

The ensemble (comprised of Jazz, Classical and Music Education students) were excellent ambassadors for the Music department. The audience responses were great; the crowd at the Berri Hotel (of a bit under 100 people) gave the ensemble a wonderful standing ovation. Brenden Baldock, music teacher at Glossop High sent the following message via email:

“Your ensemble had a massive impact on the students.  Thank you for the way you created a positive and encouraging atmosphere for our young musicians.  We all left really inspired!”

The Songs That Got Away

Former Elder Con Classical Voice student Johanna Allen, currently starring in The Sound of Music, wrote a wonderful musical/theatrical work based on the work and life of the songwriter Harold Arlen. Entitled The Songs That Got Away the show debuted at the 2014 Adelaide Cabaret Festival.  Lecturer in Jazz Piano Mark Ferguson recently had the great honour of acting as Musical Director and pianist for the show for a short season at the Glen Street Theatre on the Sydney North Shore (he was also with the show for sold-out seasons at the Melbourne Recital Centre and the Noosa Long Weekend in 2015).

A Night in Paris

Jazz staff members John Aué and Mark Ferguson and Phd candidate Julian Ferrarretto played in Melbourne during the mid-semester break with singer Lou Blackwell’s show A Night in Paris. The group sold out the Paris Cat Jazz Club and had an extremely lively gig at the Lomond Hotel to a very enthusiastic crowd.
