KickStart for Kids is a not-for-profit charity aimed at helping disadvantaged school children in South Australia through Breakfast Programs, positive mentoring and increasing self esteem.

Breakfast Program

KSFK currently provides over 1200 breakfasts per week to disadvantaged school children in South Australia. The program is supported by the Port Adelaide Football Club and as a result we call our programme the Power Breakfast Program. Once a month selected players serve breakfast and interact with children at the schools. We need more volunteers to do this role which is only a 30 minute commitment in the mornings before school starts.

Mentoring

Our mentoring program is called Mentoring Mates. Our Mentors interact with children that are at risk of disengaging from the education system. They try to spend regular time with the children, getting to know them and making a positive difference in their lives. The mentors spend an hour a week with selected kids at their school.

KSFK tries to target kids that have low self esteem and we try to make them feel good about themselves.

You can register as a volunteer online www.kickstartforkids.com.au either as a mentor or to supervise a breakfast each week.

Being a KickStart for Kids volunteer is a very rewarding experience and a valuable inclusion to any CV.

François Bourguignon, a French national, is the Director and founder of the Paris School of Economics. Prior to this, he served as Senior Vice President for Development Economics and Chief Economist at the World Bank for four years (2003-2007). While there he placed economic growth and its relationship with inequalities at the centre of the World Bank’s research agenda.

Before that period in Washington DC he was Professor of Economics at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He also founded and directed the Département et laboratoire d’Economie Théorique et Appliquée (DELTA), a research unit in theoretical and applied economics.

The Joseph Fisher lecture is organised by the University’s School of Economics and has been presented at the University almost every other year since 1904. Funds for the lectures and a medal for the top commerce student were provided by an endowment to the University in 1903 by prominent Adelaide businessman Joseph Fisher.
This year’s Fisher Lecture visit to Australia is co-sponsored by the Monash Centre for Development Economics and AusAID.

This year’s lecture will take place on Friday 24th May in Napier Lecture Theatre G04 between 5.30pm and 6.30pm.

The Professions Student Hub has recently received an award for our excellence in customer service. The award was presented at the annual Student Service Centres conference in Canberra and your Hub won the Customer Service Benchmarking Australia (CSBA) 2013 Award for Excellence in Telephone Customer Service. You’ll be pleased to know that we were the best Go8 university in the line-up.

Our award is down to both our great students and of course our dedicated staff who all work tirelessly for you in order that you gain the most out of your university experience.

CSBA have been assessing the customer service of over 250 Australian organisations to understand, measure and improve their business for decades. This is the second year that the Professions Student Hub has been involved in the telephone customer service benchmarking program and demonstrates and we are thrilled that we walked away with the gong this year.

Why not come and experience our award winning service sometime soon?

Are you a summer entry first year or third year student enrolled in Commerce (Accounting)?

If you are not currently doing a double degree, we invite you to participate in a study concerning the use of measures of personality, values and vocational interests as a basis for predicting educational outcomes in your University degree courses.

To thank you for participating, you will go in the draw to win one of two $50 Myer giftcards.

The purpose of this research is to investigate similarities and differences in students enrolled in different degrees in terms of their personalities, values, and vocational interests, and how these in turn relate to their performance in, and commitment to, their chosen degree.

Phase 1 of the study contains a number of measures that relate to personality, values, vocational interests, satisfaction, commitment and will take approximately 25 minutes to complete. This survey needs to be completed online before 29 May.

Phase 2 of the study, which needs to be completed before 25 July, includes reporting online during the winter break, the course names, the nature of these courses (compulsory or elective) as well as your percentage grades for those courses. This will take approximately five minutes. If you participate in Phase 1 of the study, an email reminder will be sent to you for Phase 2.

If you are interested in participating in this research, please contact Wen Yan and request an information sheet via email at wen.yan@student.adelaide.edu.au or on 0430440771.

Job Ready: advice on starting your career in Australia
Brought to you by g’day[sa].

This is a skills development workshop with an optional intensive mentoring and network development program. Graduating international students will learn tips on starting in their careers of choice which may help gain residency in Australia.

Supported by the University of Adelaide, it is designed to fit international students to the work culture in Australia. Most international graduates find it challenging to gain their first position to match their skill or career aspirations. Many jobs in the private sector are not advertised. Graduates with better links to local networks may gain access to these unadvertised opportunities.

The workshop covers:

Understanding the Australian business and work culture

The essential skill set employers demand of all graduates (in addition to your university qualification)

The opportunity to be embedded in a local Rotary Club and mentored to build business networks, get job referrals and, most importantly, will all help to get your career started.

WHEN

Tuesday, 16 April, 2013 | 10am – 2pm (includes a lunch break)

WHERE

BankSA Room, Level 1 Marjoribanks Building 10 Pulteney St

COST

$20 includes a full set of course notes and work exercises. Certificates of Achievement will be presented. Advance payment required (bank transfer details provided on registration). An additional cost is charged for the optional intensive Rotary mentoring program.

REGISTER

Register by emailing Euan at euan@gdaysa.com.au with “Job Ready Workshop 6″ in the subject line or by calling 0401 124 387.
