François Bourguignon, a French national, is the Director and founder of the Paris School of Economics. Prior to this, he served as Senior Vice President for Development Economics and Chief Economist at the World Bank for four years (2003-2007). While there he placed economic growth and its relationship with inequalities at the centre of the World Bank’s research agenda.

Before that period in Washington DC he was Professor of Economics at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He also founded and directed the Département et laboratoire d’Economie Théorique et Appliquée (DELTA), a research unit in theoretical and applied economics.

The Joseph Fisher lecture is organised by the University’s School of Economics and has been presented at the University almost every other year since 1904. Funds for the lectures and a medal for the top commerce student were provided by an endowment to the University in 1903 by prominent Adelaide businessman Joseph Fisher.
This year’s Fisher Lecture visit to Australia is co-sponsored by the Monash Centre for Development Economics and AusAID.

This year’s lecture will take place on Friday 24th May in Napier Lecture Theatre G04 between 5.30pm and 6.30pm.

This is a skills development workshop with an optional intensive mentoring and network development program. Graduating international students will learn tips on starting in their careers of choice which may help gain residency in Australia.

Supported by the University of Adelaide, it is designed to fit international students to the work culture in Australia. Most international graduates find it challenging to gain their first position to match their skill or career aspirations. Many jobs in the private sector are not advertised. Graduates with better links to local networks may gain access to these unadvertised opportunities.

On Thursday, 4 April 2013, the School of Economics held their Prize Award ceremony for top-performing Economics students.  Donors, friends and family were in attendance to congratulate the 2012 Prize Winners on their outstanding achievements in Economics.

The special guest for this year’s Prize Award Ceremony was Economics alumnus Tim Harcourt.  Tim is a Graduate with the University of Adelaide with a Major in Economics. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of International Business Strategy at the University of New South Wales and an advisor to the Government of South Australia in international engagement.  Tim is also a prolific writer and is author of the “The Airport Economist” which is a top bestseller for business books in Australia.

To become an economist, we recommend you do a Bachelor of Economics, with strong students often staying on for one more year to complete their Honours in Economics.  Some people like to take their qualification further and will then later come back to do their Master of Economics, or even a PhD in a specialised area of research within the Economics discipline.  Skills needed include being good with numbers, being analytical, being able to research and write detailed reports.

The Bachelor of Economics here at the University of Adelaide provides a great foundation for a wide range of careers. Recent graduates have been employed by trading and merchant banks, stockbrokers, insurance companies, accounting firms, financial planners, infrastructure and utility companies, manufacturers and distributors and a wide range of federal and state government organisations. Other employment opportunities include journalism, teaching, foreign affairs and international consulting.  Completion of an Honours degree opens up more options for specialist positions in economics, including in government and business.

Economists are responsible for predicting trends in the ever-changing economy. They help various agencies to deal with money efficiently and are consulted when a change in economic policy is required. Function

Types

These numbers will help in the prediction of future trends in the economy. They study business cycles to find and chart patterns. They also find and chart the trends of individual businesses to help them prepare for declines in the economy.

Application

• Economists use their findings in various areas of life, not simply in the area of money. Health, agriculture and education, as well as other areas, are all effected by economics. They help these industries find the best ways to compete against their rival businesses, and are also employed by the government. They track various laws and determine how they will help or hurt the economy in the future.

Taxes

• The area of taxes is strongly affected by the economy. Economists advise the government on how increases and decreases in taxes will affect people and industries, and how adjusts in social security could change the economy. They also advise the government about its own spending both in this country and abroad.
