6:00pm until 8:00pm
Location: Horace Lamb Lecture Theatre, University of Adelaide, SA

Assalamualaikum brothers and sisters.

Insha-Allah, ISSUA will be organising a lecture about key principles of Islamic finance such as:

What is the purpose of money

History and how Islamic finance works

Problem with interest and debt

Global financial crisis from an Islamic perspective

The future of Islamic finance in Australia.

This lecture will be delivered by Mr Almir Colan, an Islamic Finance Lecturer at La Trobe University.

“Islamic Finance is a universal system that can operate in developed and undeveloped countries and takes into account cultural and regional differences. It appeals to those who have a moral approach to money and is an ethical form of banking. It is not about promoting the interest of one group of people at the cost of others. So no bank will rule everything, risk and benefit is shared between banks and borrowers. There is an emphasis on keeping the financial sector in sync with the other sectors as it deals with the markets for actual goods and services ruling out gambling and speculation, and contrary to some myths it is not just for Muslims.” (Kateb E.L.,2011, Benefits of Islamic Finance as an Investment Vehicle)

Don’t miss out on this rare event.
Spread the word, invite everyone.

Jazakallahu khairan kathira.

Two University of Adelaide students have each been awarded $40,000 The Order of Australia Association Foundation Scholarships to help them complete their studies.

They have both been awarded Scholarships from The Order of Australia Association Foundation and one of them is a Professions student, Alexandra Grigg, 20, who is studing Economics and Finance.

The students will be mentored with eminent Australians whose background reflects the students’ fields of study.

Alexandra is in her third year of a double degree in Economics and Finance and is keen to pursue a career examining the role that human psychology plays in driving the economy.

“Down the track I am interested in working at the Reserve Bank of Australia in their Economics and Finance graduate programs, gaining an insight into their core policies. Hopefully, I will also get the chance to work overseas,” Alexandra said.

In 2007 Alexandra was nominated for the Zonta International Community Service Award for her voluntary work, including helping to raise money for an orphanage in Nepal.

The Riddiford Trust has provided funding for Alexandra’s scholarship.

Funding for his scholarship was provided by Mr Baillieu Myer AC, past president of the Myer Foundation.

The Secretary of The Order of Australia Association Foundation, Adjunct Professor Brian O’Keeffe AO, said the scholarships were based on a combination of academic excellence, leadership potential and community involvement and were aimed at supporting the next generation of leaders among young Australians.

Her Excellency, Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, NSW Governor and Administrator of the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia, presented the winners with their scholarship certificates at a ceremony in Darwin in April.

Join speakers from Australian Red Cross to find out more about our volunteer programs and how to register your interest.

Australian Red Cross provides relief in times of crisis, care when it’s needed most and commitment when others turn away. Red Cross is there for people in need, no matter who you are, no matter where you live.

Red Cross in South Australia provides volunteer opportunities through which people can actively volunteer their time, helping delivering quality services in the community. As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to learn new skills, work with great people and give something back to community.

The Adelaide University Red Cross Club invites you to join our Volunteer Info Night. This Info Night will introduce volunteer programs run by Australian Red Cross and explain how to register your interest to become an official Red Cross volunteer, where you can be part of the community that helps to improve lives of the most vulnerable people. It is also a great opportunity to meet like-minded and awesome people! Light refreshments will be provided as well as a chance to win a mystery prize.

If you would like to find out more, come see us at Volunteer Info Night in Harry Medlin Room (South), Union House, North Tce campus at 5:30pm (for a 6:00pm start) – 7:30pm on Monday, 23rd April 2012.
