Gary A Wittert

Professor Gary Wittert is Mortlock Professor of Medicine and Head of the School of Medicine at the University of Adelaide, Senior Consultant Endocrinologist at the Royal Adelaide  Hospital, a member of the Hanson Research Institute and founding member of the Freemasons Foundation Centre for Men’s Health. His research focuses on obesity and men’s health.

Professor Wittert was appointed to a Personal Chair at the University of Adelaide in 2004, and has been Head of the Department of Medicine, University of Adelaide since 2003, and Head of the School of Medicine from 2006.

His clinical research interests relate to appetite modulation, the effect of variations in dietary macronutrients on weight and metabolism, the regulation of body composition, cellular energy utilisation, and factors relating to the aetiology and management of obesity. He also has an interest in obesity and ageing, men’s health and utilisation of health services by men. This work, currently supported by the NHMRC and the ARC, has clinical, as well as population health components.

Professor Wittert is a co-author of 82 peer-reviewed papers, 13 book chapters, and one book. He has been the principal investigator (extensively involved in protocol design and logistics) in a number of phase I and II studies of novel pharmacological therapies for obesity. Prof essor Wittert is regarded as a leading authority on the subject of obesity management, is immediate past-President of the Australasian Society for the Study of Obesity, and Co-leader of the University of Adelaide Healthy Aging Research Cluster.
