10 BQ – Anti-disease weapon

The immune system is our natural and powerful defense mechanism against harmful bacteria and viruses (pathogens).

Amazingly, the body can generate an immune response that is tailored to a particular invading pathogen. It does this by generating biological molecules called antibodies that can recognise unique components of a pathogen and aid their clearance by triggering other factors of the immune system.

By researching and understanding the intricacies of this biological system, scientists have exploited antibodies as therapies for a broad range of applications.

To learn more about how antibodies can help us combat disease, read this 10BQ from the latest ‘Can you Believe it? ‘Anti-disease weapons’ in The Advertiser by Karina Martin.
