Real-Time Special Effects in Live Video (LP100100792)

ACVT has been awarded a 3 year ARC Linkage Grant valued at $282,217. The industry partner on the grant is Canon Information Systems Research Australia. CiSRA is the Australian R&D Centre for Canon Inc., a world leader in professional business and consumer imaging equipment and information systems. The CIs on the project are Prof. Anton van den Hengel and Dr Anthony Dick.

The goal of this work is to allow 3D visual effects to be composited into real video as the video is captured. This allows real and synthetic elements to be seen together in the live video and for the recording process to be informed by their interaction, allowing a level of interaction between the compositing and filming process that would otherwise be impossible. This will be achieved with software that analyses the video as it is captured; the only hardware involved is a laptop which is connected to the camera. The interactions required are simple and can be carried out on a touch-screen attached to the camera itself.
