Visual Tracking of Football Players
Australian Centre for Visual Technologies University of Adelaide, Australia www.acvt.com.au
Duration: 2 years
The ACVT has recently secured funding to conduct research into the tracking and identification of Australian Rules Football (AFL) players.
Existing sports tracking methods struggle with AFL due to the size of the field and the number of players. In particular, the main challenges involve tracking multiple targets in crowds when individual appearance is not distinctive. To address these problems we will develop scalable new methods that make use of known and learnt patterns of play in AFL games.
The project is run by Dr Anthony Dick and Prof. Ian Reid. It will be conducted in collaboration with Champion Data, who are the official provider of player statistics for the AFL. The resulting system will be used both for player coaching and AFL TV broadcasts, and will therefore be a high profile application of vision research. The position will suit applicants with a background in visual tracking. An interest in sports is desirable but not essential!
Within the project there will be considerable room for original research which we expect will lead to publications in computer vision conferences and journals. There will also be opportunities for joint supervision of postgraduate and honours level students, collaboration with the Centre, and with visitors and with international partners.
Each successful applicant must have:
– a PhD in a relevant discipline
– a background in computer vision, preferably including visual tracking
– experience in C++, Python and/or Matlab
– a good publication record commensurate with experience
– fluency in written and spoken English
– the ability to work individually and as a member of a broader team
Salary: University Level B (AU$83,620 – 93,027 depending on qualifications), plus benefits. Funding for relocation and conference travel is available.
The closing date for applications is Friday 1 November, 2013. Please ensure that applications, together with a full CV (including a publication list and statement of research expertise and interests) and the names of two referees, are received by 5pm Australian Central Standard Time (UTC+9.30)
