Some of Australia’s highest achieving students risk never making it to university because they live in regional or rural areas, or are experiencing financial hardship.
If it wasn’t for the Augustus Short Scholarship, an endowed fund which is generously supported by our alumni every year, Connor Bakaj might’ve been one of these students.
Connor knew that he wanted to study engineering. He lived in Renmark with his parents, so studying in Adelaide meant moving away from home and supporting himself through his studies.
“I was really worried about how I would afford everything and still be able to focus properly on my studies. The relief I felt when I heard I’d be getting an Augustus Short Scholarship was huge,” said Connor.
“The financial difficulties that I faced moving from a rural area to study at the University of Adelaide motivated me to apply for the scholarship. It has helped alleviate the financial pressure on both myself and my family to support me moving away from home and living in Adelaide to study. I don’t know what I would have done without this support.”
Connor is currently studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mechanical and Aerospace) and is now in the second year of his degree and achieving straight High Distinctions across all his subjects. “I’m so grateful for this support. Without it, my time at uni would be so much harder,” he said.
Believing that tertiary education should be accessible to all students, University of Adelaide pioneer and its first Vice-Chancellor, Dr Augustus Short envisioned opening the University doors to disadvantaged students who might not otherwise be able to attend.
Named in his honour, the Augustus Short Scholarship supports undergraduate students of high academic merit who face real barriers to participating in higher education. Recipients come from rural or remote areas, and are experiencing challenging financial circumstances or other disadvantage.
Augustus Short Scholarships offer these students meaningful financial support throughout their undergraduate degree. Currently, Connor and 15 other students are studying at the University with support from an Augustus Short Scholarship. To date this fund has helped 50 students through their higher education.
