Alumni in Focus: Yuan Yuan

This month’s Alumni in Focus is Wines by Geoff Hardy (WBGH) Export Sales Manager Yuan Yuan (Masters of Agriculture Science – Agribusiness). WBGH has a larger share of the Australian wine market in China than it has in Australia, and Yuan Yuan has played an instrumental role in driving the company’s growth.

What are your hobbies?
I fell in love with oil painting last year. I frequently go to the Splashout Studios in Marino to work on my paintings.

What is your favourite place to eat when in Adelaide?
It is hard to select just one favourite in one of the best wine and food destinations in the world – Adelaide, but Sunday brunch is definitely my thing! My favourite spot for brunch is CREAM at Jetty Road, Brighton beach.

If I could go back to my University days I would…
Appreciate it more. Trust me, university life will always be the most beautiful part of your life when you think back.

What is your most prized possession?
A family photo on my fridge which reminds me who I am all the time.

I can’t get enough of….
Ed Sheeran! I hope he never retires!

Something that makes you smile…
A nice glass of wine from anywhere in the world. I enjoy tasting masterpieces from different winemakers.

Something you are grateful for…
I grew up in a very traditional Chinese family and my moral values have made me what I am today

If I could do something differently professionally, I would…
Be more confident and plan better. I was not good at both when I had started my career.

The most valuable lesson I have learned… was at a recent trip to New Zealand to hike the glacier at Mt. Tasman. Our mountaineer told us a story about a famous banker from Wall St, New York who climbed Mt.Tasman a few years ago. This banker spent most of his life in his office making money and being successful, and had barely experienced the outdoors.  When he climbed Mt Tasman, he looked at the breathtaking view – Pacific Ocean on one side and Tasman Sea on the other side – and said to the mountaineer, “all I have done in my life is adding numbers to my bank account. But you are much richer than I am, you have this! Life is not the numbers in my bank account, it is here!”

I cannot get through the day without…
A nice coffee.

Three words your closest friends would use to describe you…
Intelligent, resilient and caring.

Your definition of success…
Enjoy what you do, and love people when you can.

My mother taught me…
To be a good person before anything else.

Your career path in two sentences or less…
I didn’t have a background in the wine business before I moved to Adelaide, but I made my way with passion, knowledge and hard work.

Biggest career highlight…
Helping our company Wines by Geoff Hardy to win Australian Exporter of the Year at the Optus  My Business Award in 2017.

How I relax…
With a nice book and a cup of green tea.

When I get home the first thing I do is…
Listen to a podcast or put some music on

The biggest risk I have taken…
… is by not telling my parents that I was studying a Masters of Wine Business at Uni. They thought I was doing a degree in accounting for a couple of years until I showed them where I work when they came to visit. But I studied and worked very hard and they are very proud of me now.

A misconception about you…
Working in the wine industry implies that one must drink a lot of wine. The truth is that while I do drink wine frequently for work, study and socializing, I am probably the most responsible wine drinker in wine industry.
