Alumni in Focus: Emily Humphreys

Emily Humphreys, Bachelor of Social Sciences and Masters of Science and Technology Commercialisation graduate, and co-founder of Wicked Lab is this month’s Alumni in Focus. Emily was one of the winners represented in South Australia’s 2018 40 under 40 awards. Wicked Lab supports change-makers to tackle complex social policy problems, such as climate change and poverty, commonly known as ‘wicked problems’.

What are your hobbies?
I’m a keen (amateur) potter. This means that I often inflict my handmade pottery items on my friends and family as gifts that I’m certain go to the back of the cupboard!

Favourite place to eat when in Adelaide?
Oh this is a hard one and I’m going to be sneaky and put three – one for each meal. Exchange on Vardon for coffee, Fairweather for lunch or brunch and Sunny’s for pizza and vino.

If I could go back to my University days I would…
Have enjoyed it more! It’s a wonderful time of your life when you get to delve deep into ideas from a variety of disciplines.

I can’t get enough of…
Coffee. I love a good brew.

Something that makes you smile...
Hugs from my two boys

Something you are grateful for…
My family, especially my supportive husband, and a career where my skills and values align.

If I could pursue a different career I would…
Be a potter – although I think the cooler term is “ceramic artist”.

The most valuable lesson I have learned…
Surround yourself with great people who you believe in and who believe in you.

I cannot get through the day without…
A hug, kiss or talk with my boys – Charlie is six and Henry is four. And coffee!

Three words your closest friends would use to describe you…
Sharp, curious, compassionate

Your definition of success…
A ‘for-purpose’ career combined with a fulfilling family life and plenty of shared joy with friends.

Your career path in two sentences or less…
I have worked in, or alongside, technology start-ups my whole career. I’ve been involved as a founder, as an executive, as a consultant and as a mentor.

Biggest career highlight?
Recently Wicked Lab was profiled in the OCED 2018 Global Trends report – Embracing Innovation in Government. There were over 275 submissions from across the globe and we are showcased as 1 of 8 Innovation Spotlights

2018 is the year that I…
Was selected one of 40 winners represented in South Australia’s 2018 40 under 40 awards

How I relax
With music and a glass of wine (or gin or tonic) with my husband.

When I get home the first thing I do is…
Kiss and wrap my arms around my boys

The biggest risk I have taken is…
Quitting my well paying ex-marketing job to leap into a business that had no steady cash flow. It was worth it.

A misconception about you
That I’ve got it all figured out. I don’t but I’m certainly enjoying the ride.
