Alumni in Focus: Rob Brookman

Adelaide Festival Executive Director and Bachelor of Arts graduate Rob Brookman AM, is this month’s Alumni in Focus. Rob founded award-winning international arts festival, WOMADelaide in 1992 and most recently rejoined Adelaide Festival as Executive Director in 2017.

What are your favourite hobbies?
Pretty much the same as my work, plus gardening and reading.

Favourite place to eat when in Adelaide?
Jolleys Boathouse

Most prized possession?
My funky little BMW i3 electric car.

I can’t get enough of…

Something that makes you smile?
A curious story well told.

Something you are grateful for?
The planet – what an incredible thing to live on. We should be more grateful for it and treat it better.

If I could pursue a different career I would…

The most valuable lesson I have learned…
Is to behave decently towards everyone but stand up to bullies.

I cannot get through the day without…

Three words your closest friends would use to describe you?
Calm. Anxious. Fair.

Your definition of success?
Events that have a transformational effect on people.

My mother taught me…
To stop worrying and go to sleep.

Your career path in two sentences or less?
Got lucky and stumbled into what I wanted to do early. Then, in a totally non-strategic way, seized opportunities which, fortunately for me, kept themselves.

Biggest career highlight?
Creating WOMADelaide in 1992.

2019 is the year I will…
Stop worrying and go to sleep… and build a new section of garden.

How do you relax?
Gardening. It’s a meditation. I don’t think about anything but the garden when I’m in it.

When I get home the first thing I do is…
Take my shoes off.

The biggest risk you’ve taken?
WOMADelaide 1993 – no safety net and nothing but wreckage if it failed.

A misconception about you?
That I’m a grown up.
