‘The Fred Johns Scholarship for Biography’ 2016 Recipient: Aidan Coleman

Congratulations to PhD Candidate Aidan Coleman, for being awarded The Fred Johns Scholarship for Biography.

With this Scholarship, Aidan will research and prepare a biography about the late Australian poet John Forbes.

When asked why he chose this topic for his biography Aidan says, many poets and critics now regard John Forbes as Australia’s most gifted poet born since WWII. There is burgeoning interest in Forbes’ work and if we were to wait even a few more years, those who were close to him, and many of the details pertinent to his story – which is so important to Australian literary history – may be lost.

As part of the Scholarship requirements, Aidan will need to lodge the completed biography with the Faculty of Arts within two years.

Aidan Coleman has written two collections of poetry which have been shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Kenneth Slessor Prize, the Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature and the Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards. Besides poetry, he writes reviews, speeches, and Shakespeare textbooks.
