The Confucius Institute’s annual Public Lecture was held at the Adelaide Festival Centre this Tuesday September 24. More than 110 guests attended this event.
The speaker, Professor Barry Sautman from Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, gave a fascinating presentation about China’s Ethnic Policies. Barry is a political scientist (PhD Columbia University) and lawyer with specializations in international law, China/US relations, contemporary China, ethnicity and nationalism.
Presented in conjunction with the Adelaide Festival Centre’s OzAsia Festival, the lecture compared the ethnic policies of China with those of the USA and India.
The lecture was introduced by Professor Mobo Gao, Director of the Confucius Institute and Chair of Chinese Studies at the University of Adelaide, and the Question and Answer session was chaired by Professor Greg McCarthy, Head of the School of Social Sciences, the University of Adelaide.
Over the last 5 years the Public Lecture series has addressed issues such as human rights, Tibet, Confucianism in modern China, Democracy and now, China’s Ethnic Policies. The lectures highlight issues of interest to an Australian audience and present perspectives from internationally renowned speakers which challenge popular views about China.
