Large scale distributed defence systems have specific environmental considerations that must be taken into account in their design, for example restrictions on space, weight and power (SWaP), real-time performance constraints, and the need for long life spans. In this work, we explore the development of performance modelling, prediction and evaluation environments that support the analysis of the performance considerations of distributed systems in relation to their environment.

We have constructed a performance modelling environment, MODPIE, which supports modelling of complex software system performance above realistic deployment scenarios, including defence standard hardware, middleware and OS environments. In our research, we develop performance analysis frameworks and tools that support interactive performance analysis in relation to environmental concerns, such as assessing the impact of a potential deployment change (I.e. change to hardware, component location, etc) on SWaP, or real-time performance.
