The University of Adelaide has worked in partnership with the Australian defence sector for many years to give our armed forces an edge, and ultimately protect the safety, freedom and prosperity of the Australian people.
Our world-class researchers are leading or contributing to the discovery and application of valuable advances in a wide range of defence-related areas: from innovative submarine modelling technology and fighter-wing sensors, to AI visual analysis tools and service personnel’s mental health.
Professor Michael Webb is Director, Defence and Security at the University of Adelaide, and Deputy Director (Defence) at its Centre for Defence Communications and Information Networking. He is also a former lead researcher at DST Group, and a past recipient of an Australian Operational Service Medal (Iraq and ICAT), and an award for excellence for contributions to enhancing the safety of Australia’s deployed troops.
Associate Professor Bruce Northcote directs the University of Adelaide’s Centre for Defence Communications Information Networking, and its Teletraffic Research Centre. He is also CEO of TelAri, a commercial spin-out, and a former Associate Member on the board of the Rapid Prototyping, Development and Evaluation (RPDE) Program, a joint initiative between industry and the Australian Department of Defence.
Associate Professor Katrina Falkner heads the University of Adelaide School of Computer Science. She also leads the school’s Computer Science Education Research Group, and the Centre for Distributed and Intelligent Technologies’ Modelling and Analysis Program. Professor Falkner has extensive industry consultation experience, including work with DST Group and National ICT Australia.
Piers Lincoln manages the University’s Institute for Photonics & Advanced Sensing (IPAS). He leads IPAS’ commercialisation activity, working with researchers to develop their products, identify industrial partners and funding streams. He has helped drive medical diagnostic, defence, mining and mineral processing, wine and environmental projects and works to build transdisciplinary teams across the University.
