The University of Adelaide’s state-of-the-art Graphene Research Hub was launched on Friday, which focuses on research and development of the “miracle material” and how it can be applied to industry.

Opened by Australian Research Council Chief Executive Professor Sue Thomas and the university’s Interim Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Mike Brooks, the ARC Research Hub for Graphene Enabled Industry Transformation is based within the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences.

Graphene Hub Launch

Hub Director, Professor Dusan Losic, said graphene was a single layer of carbon atoms that held “unrivalled material properties”.
“It has the potential for new disruptive technology that will change our lives and create new industries, the same as silicon did 60 years ago,” he said.

“It’s the thinnest, strongest, lightest material known, with the greatest surface area, and the best electrical and thermal conductivity properties of any other material.”

Professor Losic is joined by a team of talented postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers involved as part of a training component.

“The aim is that our research will transform industry and support Australian businesses to embrace cutting-edge innovation and technologies that deliver high-value returns and build

new industries,” he said.Professor Dusan Losic

“We have a vision of South Australia becoming the ‘Graphene Valley’ of Australia.”

Following the launch of the Graphene Hub, Professor Losic hosted a demonstration of the fire-resistant qualities of graphene substances with Professor Thomas.

Graphene is produced from mined graphite with South Australia home to the largest deposit of the high-quality substance at 200 million tonnes.
