Feeding 5000 and reducing food waste along the way

On Monday 29 July, the Office of Sustainability teamed up with OzHarvest to host the inaugural “Feeding the 5000” event on North Terrace Campus.

As larger events were held simultaneously in Brisbane and Sydney, OzHarvest Adelaide had a goal to feed 500 members of the general public and University community with food made from rescued surplus ingredients sourced from the Central Market and Farmers Market.

So was the goal achieved? Absolutely! Ronni Kahn, CEO and founder of OzHarvest reported that “we exceeded our goal of feeding 5000!! We are finalising numbers but with SA and Qld we are way over 6500!”

While hundreds enjoyed a delicious home-made soup, the event was less about giving away a hot meal, and more about engaging with the people who wouldn’t normally be recipients of the food that OzHarvest collects:- or even know about the service. Feeding 5000 helped draw attention to the enormous amount of food that is wasted in Australia and highlighted just how good the food that so many people throw away actually is.
