The School of Agriculture, Food and Wine are offering the following equipment to laboratories and research groups across the University:
Fourteen Mettler Toledo XP5003S top loading balances are available (three with covers). These are in perfect working order, and have had little use since they were purchased in 2005.
- 5100g x 1mg
- 7 x 12.7cm platform
- Monoblock high speed weighting cell
- Touchscreen display
- Electronic levelling control
- Temperature self-adjustment
- RS-232 interface for interfacing with computer or printer
Two Ciros CCD-ICP OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometers) are available. These are used to analyse most of the elements in the periodic table (individual elements and not compounds). Solutions of samples (normally acid digested samples like plants, food etc.) are aspirated via a peristaltic pump through a nebuliser and spray chamber into a torch which holds a 1400 W Plasma (super-heated Argon gas) running at ~10 – 12,000oC. As part of the process the individual elements in the solution emit light at specific wavelengths unique for each element which are then measured as intensities and calibrated against known element standards to finally calculate the concentration of each element in the original sample.
Both units are currently connected to a single 3-phase power unit and cooling unit. Risk Assessment and Safe Operating Procedure documents will be provided. DKSH maybe engaged for assistance with decommissioning and recommissioning.
