Travel News: Virgin Australia changes airfare structure

Virgin Australia (VA) is implementing a new fare structure for domestic, trans-Tasman, international short-haul and international long-haul flights from 7 September 2016. ‘Fares For You’ will replace the existing fare structure and offer 9 fare types across the VA network.

The domestic fare structure will see the introduction of the Getaway, Elevate, Freedom, Business Saver and Business Fare families.

For trans-Tasman and short-haul international – Go, Go Plus, Getaway, Premium Saver, Premium, Business Saver and Business Fare families will be introduced.

For long-haul international – Getaway, Elevate, Freedom, Premium Saver, Premium, Business Saver and Business Fare families will be introduced.

There are some important changes to the fare rules, some of which we have highlighted below.

  • Getaway Fares – cannot be held in credit, no name changes are permitted, Fly Ahead is not permitted on this fare type for travel on/after 1 Nov 2016.
  • Elevate Fares – no change fee if changes are made at least 30 days before departure
  • Freedom Fares – Greater flexibility with changes and options for payment deadline
