Travel to destinations designated by smartraveller.gov.au as ‘reconsider your need to travel’ or ‘do not travel’ are considered “high risk” and require additional approval using the Request for Approval to Travel to a High Risk Destination’ form.
Prior to making any travel plans, applicants must consult travel warnings issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Travellers are advised to register their travel with smartraveller.gov.au and monitor variations of travel advice prior to departure, particularly for countries such as Iran, where Australians may be at greater risk of arbitrary detention or arrest. The Australian Government is not able to intervene in court proceedings or legal matters in Iran, so the ability to provide consular assistance is limited.
