HSW Handbook Approval: Firearms Safety Management

The revised HSW Handbook Chapter “Firearms Safety Management” has now been posted on the HSW Website.

The key changes to the chapter for noting are:

  • The requirements have been aligned to the revised SA Firearms Legislation (Firearms Act 2015 , Firearms Regulations 2017).
  • The chapter is only applicable to firearms as defined under the Act.  Other devices e.g. bird net canons, captive bolt humane killers, underwater power heads and other projectile devices have been removed from the process.  Users of these devices are still required to meet the requirements of the Hazard Management and Plant and Equipment HSW Handbook chapters.
  • The chapter is now aligned to the revised HSW Training Plan HSW Handbook chapter.
  • There are clearly stipulated requirements to ensure that a person can only be an Authorised Firearms user at the University, if they hold the (1) appropriate firearms licence; and (2) the licence is for the category of work to be undertaken.  (In accordance with SA Firearms legislation)
