Trade Policy Training for Pacific Island Government Officials

In 2010, the Institute completed delivery of an eighteen month trade training program for Pacific Island government officials designed to prepare them for so-called “PACER-Plus” negotiations with Australia and New Zealand. IIT’s success in delivering the 2009-2010 program has led to a new contract with AusAID for an additional 14 one-week intensive training modules over 2011-2012.

Fourteen to sixteen island officials participate in each of the one-week modules, with nine modules delivered in Adelaide and one module delivered in Tonga. Each of the modules is designed to focus on a particular topic (agriculture, industrial tariffs, trade in services, intellectual property rights, investment, etc.) and in-house expertise of the Institute was supplemented by experts from other parts of the University.
