The Twenty-Second AEM-CER Consultations

Joint Media Statement: AEM-CER Consultations, September 2017

On 9 September 2017 in Pasay City, Philippines, Economic Ministers from the ten ASEAN Member States, Australia and New Zealand (Closer Economic Relations –CER) met for the Twenty-Second AEM-CER Consultations.

At this meeting the outcomes of the Non-Tariff Measures led by the Institute for International Trade’s Dr Uwe Kaufmann were presented to Ministers.  The Media Release noting the outcomes of the meeting including the following paragraph on the NTM Report:

“The Ministers welcomed the report on progress on the review of non-tariff measures (NTMs) provided for in AANZFTA. They tasked Senior Officials to implement the recommendations to make NTMs an ongoing part of AANZFTA’s work programme, including by making AANZFTA more business-friendly, giving stronger attention to the interests and concerns of small and medium sized enterprises, and encouraging good regulatory practice. Ministers emphasised the importance of enhanced engagement with business in working to address NTMs.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade reported that it has been recommended that the full report be made available to the public and we hope that this will take place in the lead up to ASEAN’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations in November 2017.
