Law Week 2011 – Tour of Arthur Boyd’s The Judges Series

Once again the Adelaide Law School will host several activities to acknowledge Law Week 2011. This year the theme is community and social justice. In the second week of May there will be a Tour of Arthur Boyd’s The Judges Series at the University campus.

Arthur Boyd chose the theme for his series of 12 paintings, The Judges, in the hope that judges would never forget about human frailties and the susceptibility of temptation.  The paintings were commissioned by the University of Adelaide in 1967, but on completion were received with initial hostility by the Law Faculty due to their challenging and controversial depictions of judges.

Originally housed in the Union Theatre Cellar Bar, these paintings have for the last few years been located in an area of the University not accessible to members of the public. The University of Adelaide’s Art & Heritage Collections is now offering two thirty-minute lunch time tours of the paintings.

Registration for these tours is required as the area in which the paintings are displayed is limited in space.

Tours are scheduled on;

  • Monday, 9 May 2011 at 1:00pm
  • Wednesday, 11 May 2011 at 12:00pm

Registered participants can meet their tour guide at the Front of the Mitchell Building at the University of Adelaide at the allocated time.
