CEDA and the University of Adelaide invite you to engage in a critical discussion around Environmental Law and global accountability. Polly Higgins describes herself as a ‘lawyer for the earth’ and is in Adelaide as part of Womadelaide. For years now, her love of the environment and the law has set her on a path working towards an international law of Ecocide, to hold those responsible for the destruction of the world’s eco-systems to account. Polly has submitted a second proposal to the United Nations: the Crime of Ecocide. She argues that Ecocide is the 5th Crime Against Peace, yet to be recognised alongside Genocide, Crimes Against Humanity, War Crimes and Crimes of Aggression. Polly will be joined by Professor Ian Lowe Emeritus Professor in the School of Science at Griffith University, an Adjunct Professor at two Australian universities and the President of the Australian Conservation Foundation and Allan Holmes Chief Executive of the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Heritage.
