On 16 November 2016, The Hon Justice Melissa Perry presented a public lecture on ‘Autonomous weapons, artificial intelligence, and the rule of law’. Her Honour’s talk identified the significant moral, ethical and legal questions raised by any situation in which human lives could be taken by a determination made by software alone. She emphasised the importance of the involvement of lawyers in the development of these new technologies to ensure compliance with the rule of law. The talk was highly engaging and informative, and generated significant interaction from the audience of 60+ people. Her Honour is a member of RUMLAE’s Advisory Board. The use of autonomous weapons and artificial intelligence is a key aspect of the RUMLAE research agenda.
