As the end of 2016 draws near, the Law School has finalised results for our students and is now looking to 2017. It has been a busy year. As part of our teaching programs, we have shepherded our students through another full year of academic endeavor. In our clinics we have assisted over 150 people in need of legal advice. We have sent 104 interns out into the community to assist in a range of NGOs and other organisations. Through our research we have turned a critical eye on the law and our society, we have reported, investigated, described, analysed, critiqued, synthesised, examined, considered, admonished, recommended and taken a stand in 95 unique research articles, books, and books chapters, not to mention a myriad of reports, speeches, media appearances, commentaries, op eds, blogs and tweets. We have held approximately 40 events, conferences, workshops, and lectures for our fellow academics, the profession and the broader community and, as if that wasn’t enough, we have held a pancake breakfast.
We would like to extend particular thanks to the legal profession and the judiciary, whose support for this work and our students is critical to our success. This generosity takes many forms, from strategic advice at the advisory board level, right through to teaching in our classrooms. This year we have been delighted to welcome to our advisory board three new members, Justice Natalie Charlesworth, Federal Court justice, Ms Shanti Berggren, Optus Deputy General Counsel and Mr Nick Linke of Fisher Jeffries. They join our existing members, the Hon Tom Gray (Chair), the Hon Margaret Nyland AM, Justices Martin Hinton, Melissa Perry and Malcolm Blue, Elisa Holmes, Dick Whitington QC, Julie Von Doussa, Stephen Hodder and Christopher Findlay. At the same time we have farewelled the Hon Paul Finn, Tony Abbott AM and Amanda Devonish. We warmly thank them for their service and wish them well.
We are also very pleased to advise that Professor Melissa de Zwart will become Dean from February 2017. Melissa will carry us forward into 2017 and beyond with great leadership and vision.
Finally, we wish you all a wonderful Christmas with family and friends and a safe and happy 2017.
