LLB and BA student Caitlyn Georgeson has been awarded the SBS Student and Rising Star of the Year Award at the 2017 Australian LGBTI Awards.
Caitlyn has served on the University of Adelaide Student Representative Council as Queer Officer and established Pride Club, a community that runs social events for LGBTI students and their friends. As Social Justice Officer on the Law Students’ Society, Caitlyn also organised the Law School’s first event with a LGBTI focus. This event, entitled ‘LGBTIQ* and the Law’, saw a panel of legal experts share insights into issues affecting LGBTI people in Australia and around the world.
Caitlyn was awarded a Summer Research Scholarship in 2015 to assist Professor Laura Grenfell and Professor Anne Hewitt in identifying the barriers faced by transgender people when attempting to legally change their gender under South Australian legislation. Caitlyn has also recently returned from a Human Rights Internship in Cambodia at the United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials.
Caitlyn has been assisted throughout her degrees by the Pinnacle Foundation, an Australian foundation that provides scholarships and mentoring opportunities to LGBTI students. Caitlyn is the 2017 Commonwealth Bank Scholar and is currently mentored by a Federal Circuit Court Judge.
