In June, Dr Nengye Liu was invited by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), one of China’s leading universities and a C9 (equivalent to Go8) member, to speak at the International Conference ‘Law and Governance: Emerging Issues in the Polar Regions’. The conference attracted a diversified group of scholars from international universities including: Lapland, Tromsø, Tasmania, St. Petersburg, Nottingham, Dundee, Tongji. There were also think tanks involving the Fridtjof Nansen Institute and Shanghai Institute for International Studies. Dr Liu delivered a paper that compares China’s roles in the governance of the South China Sea and the Polar Regions.
The conference was organised by SJTU’s Centre for Polar and Deep Ocean Development, led by Prof Julia Guifang Xue, Koguan Chair Professor of the Law of the Sea. Dr Liu has been a global associate of the Centre since 2016. Dr Liu was also awarded a University of Adelaide Priority Partnership Grant from DVCR (Research) recently. This will enable Prof Julia Xue to visit Adelaide Law School in the Semester 1 of 2018.
