Frontiers in Ocean Sustainability – Co-designing Research and Solutions

On 19-22 September, Dr Nengye Liu was invited by Germany’s Future Ocean Cluster of Excellence to present at International Conference “Frontiers in Ocean Sustainability – Co-designing Research and Solution” in Halifax, Canada. The Conference was jointly organised by Future Ocean and Dalhousie University’s Ocean Frontiers Institutes – two large trans-Atlantic initiatives on ocean research. The Conference brought together a multidisciplinary group of established and emerging scholars from University of Kiel, Dalhousie, University of British Columbia, UC Santa Barbara, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and so on.

In the Ocean Law and Governance Panel, chaired by Prof Aldo Chircop (Canadian Research Chair in Maritime Law and Policy, Dalhousie) and Prof Nele Matz-Luck (Professor of the Law of the Sea, Kiel), Dr Liu gave a presentation “Regulating China’s Distant Water Fishing in the Polar Regions, Interaction between International and Domestic Law”. This is based on preliminary findings of Dr Liu’s Australia-China Joint Action Project, funded by Academy of Social Sciences in Australia.
