On 13 August, Adelaide Law School’s / RUMLAE’s Associate Professor Matthew Stubbs spoke at the Raising the Bar event on the topic ‘Laws for the Final Frontier’. Addressing a sizeable crowd at the Little Bang Brewing Co in Stepney, Matthew spoke about some key contemporary challenges in international space law, and the key threats to the continuing peaceful exploration and use of outer space. Matthew outlined the work being done under the leadership of Professors Dale Stephens and Melissa de Zwart of the Research Unit on Military Law and Ethics / RUMLAE at Adelaide Law School, in conjunction with global partners, on the Woomera Manual on the International Law of Military Space Operations. He explained how this work makes a key contribution to articulating and clarifying the law, which in turn reduces the risks that potential armed conflict in outer space poses to humankind.
