On the move: changes to Commonwealth Government portfolios

A suite of portfolio changes following the federal election has led to changes to the name and composition of the Department of Education (formerly the Department of Education and Training).

A number of ministries were moved out of the Education portfolio; with vocational education and training and apprenticeships relocated to the Employment Portfolio, and migrant adult education moved to the Home Affairs portfolio.

These changes are included in the Administrative Arrangement Order and updated Ministry List published last week.

Those Commonwealth Government Departments that have been renamed are listed below:

Department of Education Formerly Department of Education and Training
Department of Agriculture Formerly Department of Agriculture and Water Resources
Services Australia Formerly Department of Human Services
Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business Formerly Department of Jobs and Small Business
Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development Formerly Department of Regional Development, Infrastructure and Cities

Another noteworthy change was the establishment of the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA). This new executive agency will be attached to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet with a broad reference to lead and co-ordinate policy development and implementation as well as assess and monitor the delivery of services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The NIAA will commence operation on 1 July 2019.
