“Akiko Went to Paris”: The Woman Poetic Star of Modern Japan
Rare Books & Special Collections
Level 1, Barr Smith Library
24 June – 19 July 2013
Drawing on materials from Rare Books & Special Collections and the private collection of Wendy Ella Wright, this display explores the artistic dialogue and cultural exchanges between Japan and the West during the late 19th to early 20th century. Starting with the Paris Exposition of 1867, Japan’s influence on the French Impressionists, the development of Art Nouveau and European and Australian culture was profound, as was the impact of modernism on the Japanese poet Yosano Akiko.
