Jennefer Lyn Bagaporo – 2018 Hugh Martin Weir Prize Winner

Jennefer is undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts. Her thesis is entitled, Challenging Masculinities: The internationisation and performance of masculinities among Filipino men during internal displacement due to armed conflict.

Jennefer’s research aims to examine the performance of masculinities among Filipino men in southern Philippines who have experienced internal displacement due to armed conflict. Men remain overlooked in both academic and practical studies on gender and forced displacement. Because the protracted armed conflict in the Philippines is a civil conflict, prisoners of war, particularly men, are less likely taken. Nonetheless, the effects of conflict and forced displacement on displaced men can be damaging, involving forced movement, separation from family, and the threat of violence.

The prize will assist Jennefer to complete her fieldwork and seek publication.
