Pigs, Foam and Fishing – The Life of a Petroleum Engineer

Oil and gas occur in the tiny spaces between grains of rock, often three to four kilometres below the surface of the earth or sea floor. Have you ever thought about the problem of figuring out where it is, how much is there, how to get it out and what its worth? This is the job of a petroleum engineer. Petroleum engineers earn a fantastic income, travel the world, and work on interesting, multi-million dollar projects. They use leading-edge technology, such as computer simulations and 3D virtual reality, to solve the many challenges of getting natural resources out of the earth.

A Look Inside Your Digital Camera – Dr Matthew Sorell

After thirty years of development, digital cameras really took off in 2003 and since have managed to all but wipe out film cameras. The multi-billion dollar digital camera industry is founded on enormous advances in optical sensors, micro-motors, displays, system-on-chip integration, data compression, memory devices, high efficiency energy storage and human-machine interaction. In this talk we take a look inside the digital camera and show how this one device relates to studies in electronics, computer systems, telecommunications, avionics and sustainable energy. We also look at some of the emerging applications and challenges in law enforcement and security. You won’t believe what we can find out about you.
