The 2014 Industry Placement Scholarship attracted 50 applications from students from across the state. This followed PICSE classroom presentations with Year 10, 11 and 12 students at various schools. After interviewing of many worthy applicants, 20 students from 14 different schools were award scholarships.

The IPS started with our camp at the end of November. We thank the following teams for creating so many wonderful experiences for our students

* SARDI Food Safety and Innovation, Waite – Students conducted food science activities and sensory analysis with some very engaging scientists.

* Yalumba Winery, Barossa – Production facilities, chemical analysis and microbes. Some hands on experience in a real laboratory was a highlight for many students.

* Yookamurra Wildlife Sanctuary – Understanding our land, it’s challenges, it’s uniqueness followed by students conducting a nocturnal survey of fauna.

* Century Orchards, Renmark – Innovation horticulture in the Riverland, students were set to work in the field using a ‘pressure bomb’ to monitor the stress levels of almond trees.

* AgriExchange, Renmark – Processing, storing and the scientific and logistical considerations to move juicy fruit.

* Calperum Station, Ra Ra – Revitalising the land and learning from agriculture of the past, students set out on foot through the scrub to find bores and take salinity readings.

* Biological Services, Loxton – The sex life of bugs and using biological control to address pest issues on crops. Students were intrigued in the glasshouses.

* SARDI Aquatic, West Beach – Learning about the science happening under the water off our local beaches and the opportunities for fisheries in our state.

* Haighs Chocolates, Mile End – All in the name of learning about quality assurance and food science roles, including one the most envied in Adelaide.

* University of Adelaide, Waite – Course talks with Dr Paul Grbin and Dr Carolyn Schultz, finished off with a tour of the Plant Accelerator.

The camp was gave students the opportunity to see science and careers they had not before. Students said they had learned that science in the primary industry was broader than they thought. Most were already considering a future in science, but after camp had new found areas of interests to direct their study options toward. The students were a wonderful bunch, who were polite, intrigued, fun and keen to ask questions.

The 2014 Teacher PD was our most popular ever. Thirty middle and secondary science teachers joined us for the 2 day workshop which was held in the Barossa at Nuriootpa High School, followed by the Waite. Grains were a well received topic, with many relevant curriculum links provided by the Belinda Cay, GRDC. Field visits also included the NPEC site in Nuriootpa, where we heard about the innovation strategies South Australia is using to address the issue of waste water from wineries. The day was finished off with a tour of Nuriootpa High School, including their successful barramundi farm, food technology centre and winery (including a very welcome taste test of the students efforts). A few dozens packed in the vans and back to Adelaide for a fun and social dinner.
The second day we started with learning about waste water treatment and clever ways to teach this at SA Water. Sand, sequins, beads and more provided a challenge and a nifty classroom idea. Up at the Waite Pauline Mooney from SARDI laid out the facts about food waste at a domestic and industry level, with teachers appreciating the message and noting this topic for the inclusion in various units. After resource sharing, propagation of seeds was on the menu thanks to Dr Carolyn Schultz, University of Adelaide.
After a very successful Teacher PD and great feedback from teachers, we are now developing the Teacher PD 2015 to be held at the end of Term 4.

The 2014 Science and Engineering Investigation Awards were another great success this year. In collaboration with PICSE GrowSmart, we held 4 Regional SEIA Judging days; Loxton, Tanunda, Golden Grove and The Waite. We had over 250 students from Year 5 – 12 participating in this, with more involved at a class level. Students, teachers and […]
