Ms Stephanie Begg (McDevitt laboratory) has been awarded the 2015 Australian Federation of Graduate Women Barbara Hale Fellowship. Congratulations Stephanie.
The AFGW Barbara Hale Fellowship is worth $8,000 and will support Stephanie’s project, ‘Mapping the dynamic metalloproteome of Streptococcus pneumoniae at the host-pathogen interface to reveal novel antimicrobial targets.’ This is an extension of Stephanie’s PhD research, which aims to understand the role that essential micronutrients, such as metal ions, play in the colonisation and persistence of S. pneumoniae in humans. Streptococcus pneumoniae is the world’s foremost bacterial pathogen, with the greatest burden of disease in children under five years of age and the elderly, and the long-term aim of the research is to develop new drug targets against it.
