The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Broad Funding Announcements seek investigator-initiated applications for patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) projects aligned with the following four priority areas:
Addressing Disparities
PCORI seeks to fund studies that provide evidence to help guide decisions about how to eliminate disparities in health and health care, as well as how to ensure that people receive care according to their needs and have the opportunity to achieve the best-possible health outcomes.
- Maximum project budget (direct costs) – US $2M (approx. AUD $2.55M)
- Maximum project period – 3 years
Assessment of Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options
Where therapies or technologies have been approved and marketed, there are often gaps in research comparing their effectiveness with that of other clinical options, and prior research may not have included outcomes that are important to patients and their caregivers. PCORI seeks to fund projects that address the comparison of specific clinical services or strategies that are defined clearly and can be replicated in other clinical settings with minimal adaptations or changes.

- Maximum project period – 3 years
Communication and Dissemination Research
The Communication and Dissemination Research Program invites applications that study the comparative effectiveness of communication and dissemination strategies. PCORI is looking for strategies aimed at informing and empowering patients, caregivers, and other healthcare decision makers so that they know what questions to ask and have the information they need to provide support in shared decision making.
- Maximum project budget (direct costs) – US $2M (approx. AUD $2.55M)
- Maximum project period – 3 years
Improving Healthcare Systems
The Improving Healthcare Systems Program invites applications for research that studies the comparative clinical effectiveness of alternative features of healthcare systems that are intended to optimize the quality, outcomes, and efficiency of patient care and that have the greatest potential for sustained impact and replication within and across healthcare systems.
- Maximum project budget (direct costs) – US $5M (approx. AUD $6.38M)
- Maximum project period – 5 years
Eligibility
Foreign organisations may apply as long as there is demonstrable benefit to the U.S. healthcare system and U.S. efforts in the area of patient-centered research can be shown clearly.
Organisations may submit multiple applications for funding. Individuals are not permitted to apply.

- 31 October 2017 – Letter of Intent (LOI) directly to Sponsor
- Copy of LOI forwarded to rbinternational@adelaide.edu.au
- 30 January 2018 – full applications (by invitation only) submitted to Research Services for internal review.
