US Department of Defense Bone Marrow Failure Research Program: Idea Development Award 2018/19

The BMFRP Idea Development Award is intended to support innovative ideas and high-impact approaches based on scientifically sound evidence to move toward the understanding and curing bone marrow failure diseases.

This award mechanism is designed to support new ideas.

Proposed research studies should have a high probability of revealing new avenues of investigation.

Funding & Duration

The anticipated direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed US$325,000 (approx AUD $430,000).

The maximum period of performance is 2 years.


Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Institutions) are eligible to apply.

Established Investigators: Independent investigators at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent) and 10 years or more from a terminal degree at the time of the application submission deadline are eligible to apply as EIs.

Early Career Investigators: Independent investigators at the level of Assistant Professor, Instructor, or Assistant Research Professor (or equivalent) and less than 10 years from his/her terminal degree (excluding time spent in medical residency or during family medical leave) at the time of the application submission deadline are eligible to apply as ECIs.

Time spent as a postdoctoral fellow is not excluded and must be within the 10-year span from the time of terminal degree.

Postdoctoral fellows are not eligible for ECI designation.

An eligible PI, regardless of ethnicity, nationality, or citizenship status, must be employed by, or affiliated with, an eligible organisation.
