The Gerda Henkel Foundation supports research scholarships in the historical humanities, particularly within the fields of:
- art history
- historical Islamic studies
- history of law
- history of science
- early history
Scholarships are worth €2,000 (approx. AUD $3,000) per month for postdoctoral candidates and €2,700 (approx. AUD $4,000) per month for scholars after postdoctoral lecture qualification, plus travel and material aid as required. Endowments for scholarships abroad are worth €500 (approx. AUD $780) per month for postdoctoral candidates and €675 (approx. AUD $1,000) per month for scholars after postdoctoral lecture qualification. An additional monthly family grant is available, worth €300 (approx. AUD $470) for one child, €400 (approx. AUD $620) for two children and €500 (approx. AUD $780) for three or more children. Scholarships generally last between one and 24 months.
Postdoctoral researchers must have received their PhD certificate within the last 10 years. The dissertation must have already been published at the time the application is made, and the topic of the proposed research project must clearly differ from the topic of the PhD thesis. Applications may be made by postdoctoral candidates or scholars with postdoctoral lecture qualification.
