This investment aims to develop improved rhizobial strains and inoculation practices for chickpea, lentil and faba bean in acidic soils of the Western and Northern regions, to complement the recently contracted Southern project (DAS1805-004RTX).
Rhizobial screening and N fixation experiments in winter pulses will be coordinated nationally across multiple environments. Identification of desirable traits for selection and research activities including standardised protocols will also be coordinated nationally, including a consistent approach to crop type and rhizobial strains tested. A regionally relevant approach to assess the effect of management practices on N fixation will be applied.
Collaboration across the three regional investments, the genebanks and the regional extension projects is essential.
