Grand Challenges Canada: Options for Pregnancy Termination Initiative

Grand Challenges Canada invites applications for its options for pregnancy termination initiative. This supports bold ideas with big impact for women’s and girls’ access to safe abortion in low- and middle-income countries. The purpose is to support the development and testing of new approaches to increasing early access to existing abortion products and services, and new methods of pregnancy termination.

Funding & Duration

Approximately 20 seed grants are available, each worth up to CAD $250,000 (approx. AUD $261,000) over 18 to 24 months to develop and test the innovation. Selected innovators may have the opportunity to apply for transition-to-scale funding of up to CAD $1M (approx. AUD $1.04M) to support the refinement, testing and implementation for scale of solutions that have achieved proof of concept.

Eligibility

Innovations must benefit women and girls among the poorest of the poor in eligible Low to Middle Income Countries. Innovators must have a plan in place to mitigate risks of unintended negative consequences that may stem from increased awareness of safe abortion rights and services.

Social enterprises and other recognised institutions, such as non-profit organisations, academic institutions and for-profit companies, may apply. Both preclinical and clinical stage proposals are eligible. Applicants are encouraged to secure co-funding.
